The HKU-UBS SSILP 2025 fellows embarked on an enlightening journey to Shenzhen on July 4th, 2025, exploring the intersection of technology, philanthropy, and community development in mainland China.

The morning began at Tencent headquarters, where Ms. Xiaolin Tao, Assistant General Manager of Tencent’s Sustainable Social Value Department Strategy Center, shared insights into their collaborative approaches with nonprofit partners. Mr. Eric Yu, Lead of the Tencent Philanthropy platform, then demonstrated how AI technology and digital platforms are revolutionizing fundraising for nonprofit organizations across China. The visit ended with an eye-opening tour to the Tencent Exhibition Hall that showcases the business evolutions and technological strength of this tech giant.

During lunch, several partners from a few mainland NPOs joined to connect with the fellows, including China Global Philanthropy Institute, Impact Hub Shenzhen, Chen Yidan Foundation and Guangdong Harmony Community Foundation. It provided a great opportunity for our fellows to expand their network, learn new practices and share experiences with each other.

The afternoon took SSILP fellows to Nantou Ancient City, where they witnessed grassroots community development in action. Under the guidance of Ms. Huimin Xian, Head of the Nantou Ancient City Community Building Action, they explored various community initiatives that exemplify urban renewal. From women’s handcraft entrepreneurship to local delivery services, these projects demonstrate how community engagement and physical space renovation can work together to enhance residents’ quality of life.
